Your reaction to a work of literature could be in the form of an expository essay, for example if you decide to simply explain your personal response to a work.

The expository essay can also be used to give a personal response to a world event, political debate, football game, work of art and so on. You want to get and, of course, keep your reader’s attention. This is the type of essay where you try to convince the reader to adopt your position on an issue or point of view.

You should already have drawn some conclusions about the quality and validity of these sources; and you should know how much you agree or disagree with the points made in your sources and the reasons for your agreement or disagreement.

Further, you must go beyond the critique of individual sources to determine the relationship among them.

It will frequently be helpful for your readers if you provide at least partial summaries of sources in your synthesis essays.

At the same time, you must go beyond summary to make judgments - judgments based, of course, on your critical reading of your sources - as you have practiced in your reading responses and in class discussions. Here your rationale, your argument, is most important. This is the type of essay where you prove that your opinion, theory or hypothesis about an issue is correct or more truthful than those of others. You are presenting an opinion and trying to persuade readers, you want to win readers over to your point of view. In short, it is very similar to the persuasive essay (see above), but the difference is that you are arguing for your opinion as opposed to others, rather than directly trying to persuade someone to adopt your point of view. Tips for writing argumentative essays: 1) Make a list of the pros and cons in your plan before you start writing. The right use of this tool is one of the greatest ways of assuring the quality of life within a society. What factors determine if a student is going to get a good education and will succeed in society? Is the information in source B, for example, an extended illustration of the generalizations in source A?Would it be useful to compare and contrast source C with source B?Is it the way in which he or she is taught or is its what he or she is being taught. In order to lead this full, successful life, one must first gain the background knowledge on how to do so. Now finally, 30 years later, I think I have the answers. An education can be defined as, a social process by which, skills, beliefs, attitudes and ideas are learned. Questions like these are ones that I used to ask myself.
